Your (first) hello.

It makes me feel better. That first moment my eyes open and I wince to a world where I’m no longer sleeping. No, just a little bit longer.

It’s still dark in the room but I know I’ve done it. I’m awake. And I already want to be asleep again. But there is one silver lining. Your first hello.

Yes, sometimes it never comes. But on the days it does means the world to me. That I got that moment of attention means everything and it all just continues building up for the rest of the day. And I’m content with it. The simple how do you dos and how’s it goings make me feel remembered.

Nothing is more special than your first hello. From the last person I think of at night, you’re the first I think of when I wake.

Maybe today will be a day where I get one. But I’ll be fine if I don’t. I can’t expect everyday to be perfect and I can’t expect all attention to be on me. And I won’t have it that way.

I want to earn that hello. I want you to remember me naturally and know that you’re the last and first thing on my mind. And maybe one day I’ll be as important to you.

—Until then I’ll keep saying ‘good morning’ and ‘good night.’
